Working On The Script

Hello:

I am now going to go ahead and do a script.i have folks here in Maine that will be helping and I will contact some of the folks who were on the blog for their help.
I have 20 German Soldier Characters and will use 25 - 40 Eastern European/Russian Partisan types.

See my previous posts for character names I thought up.I have more than enough German Character names and have to think up around 10 more Russian type names.

I was also lucky to be able to see a real Fiesler Fi 156 plane and Chris from 3rd Panzer Grenadier got to ride in the plane.The plane took off to go on a scouting mission as part of the day's battle scenario.

The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch (stork) was a small German liaison aircraft built by Fieseler before and during World War II, and production continued in other countries into the 1950s for the private market. It remains famous to this day for its excellent STOL performance, and French-built later variants are a common fixture at air shows.The Storch (Stork) was designed in 1935 by Fieseler, Mewes and Bachem, in response to a contest for a general utility airplane by the RLM. The plane flew for the first time May 24th, 1936. Among its key features was its maneuverability, extremely low stalling speed of 32 mph, and its short field takeoff and landing characteristics. In late 1937, the Storch was accepted by the Luftwaffe and, throughout WWII, was widely used by German military forces for reconnaissance, liaison, ambulance, and other duties and by high ranking officers as personal transports. Between 1937 and 1945, the German Air Force accepted 2,871 Storchs.

The 88mm Flak Gun at Collings Foundation

Here are some photos of an actual 88mm flak gun I saw at the Living History Event.I have also included some brief information on the gun.The name applies to a series of anti-aircraft guns officially called the 8,8 cm FlaK 18, 36 or 37 and the name could also describe newer and more powerful models, the FlaK 41 and 43, although these were different weapons.

German 88mm gun is probably the best known artillery piece of World War II. First time 88mm saw combat was in Spain during the Civil War in 1936, where it proved itself to be not only excellent anti-aircraft gun but also ideal tank killer due to its high muzzle velocity and efficient heavy projectile. It again proved to be an excellent anti-tank gun in France in 1940, especially against heavily armored French Char B1-bis heavy tanks and British Mk.II Matilda infantry tanks. By the time when it arrived in North Africa it was a feared tank killer, which could knock any Allied tank at distances well over 1000 meters. It again proved its reputation in Russia, where it was the only gun capable of dealing with Soviet T-34/76 medium tanks and KW-1 heavy tanks, before the arrival of heavier German tanks. 88mm Flak guns were also used as field artillery - e.g. during the Battle of the Bulge. The only problem with 88mm Flak series was its height and weight, which forced it in action to rely on its power and range rather than concealment. During the war 88mm Flak series guns were used aside of the German Army by Italy and captured examples were often used by the Allies including US Army in late 1944 in Western Europe. After the war many 88mm Flak series guns were used by many countries including former Yugoslavia and Denmark.

Columbus Day Weekend WW2 Re-Enactment

Yesterday I went down to Stow, Massachusetts to meet up with Chris and the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division and it was awesome.I saw all types of weaponry from WW2 and got to hold some of the old standards.For some folks this is a very serious hobby.They will really look at all the detail to get it right.The way it used to be in those times.Also cool was seeing girls dressed in 1940's clothing and some girls were dressed as nurses or Women in the various U.S.A. Services.
I also saw a few airplanes,tanks,mortars,grenades,"88" Flak Gun,various Armed Service Re-Enacters of Russian,British,and US.
I also met up with Mike from Albany who does a Russian 3rd Rifle Division and knows some of my old Albany friends.I am going to get into more contact with Mike and maybe they will sign on to join in on the film.We could use 6 or so Russian Army Re-Enacters.Time to rap up your puttees men.......if you know how to !!!!

Things are shaping up now and it is getting time to do the script.I am basing this film on 20 German soldier parts and 20 - 35 Russian/EasternEuropean Partisans.
Now let me upload some photos and go off to do my errands.

I have been thinking of characters so here is what i have and I might try and describe each one better.I also should get with Chris on a list of the Russian type kits they might have.That way we can know who has what arms in our merry band of partisans.

Working On Movie Layout

First off I want to tell you how I would like to end this film.I have thought on an ending for a while and came up with this.
Fritz Martin Von-Stempler is the highest officer (maybe Hauptmann) and has been in charge of this group.After he witnesses the horrible end of his men he is left alive.The creature being who looks like a distorted air effect settles on each soldier killing them but when it settles on Von-Stempler it leaves him alive but crazy.
Von-Stempler is sitting on the ground leaning against a tree.He will start muttering and screaming in the Elder HPL Language.He is screaming about Cthulu,Hastur,Shub-Niggurath,etc and does this for around 30 seconds.
Then you hear a branch break sound and Von-Stempler looks up to see:
(new camera view) the barrel of a gun pointing at him and a partisan behind the gun.He shoots the gun (which is almost pointed at the camera view) and then the screen goes black.
now it is time for the end credits as that is my ending of the film.
So in the end Von-Stempler's doom was not death but madness which lead to his death.

Now onto some more structure to this film...........................
NOTE:WHEN WE DO HAVE BATTLE SCENES WE SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE SOME DIALOGUE/POV's FROM PARTISAN SIDE TOO.

1.The film opens with a POV of running thru the woods.You hear small arms fire in the background and the casmera pans and you now see that others are running with you.The Germans are retreating thru forest and as they run a few men are shot and die right off adding to the thrill of escaping and living.This type of scene could take up 5 - 15 minutes of the film

2.next up they have to stop and make a camp for the night.sentries are posted.men eat what they can.sometime in the night a death occurs and they discover strange wounds.
The wounds are facial/neck and not like a gunshot or knife wound.....................

3.next day they are back at it going thru deep forest.they come across some dead partisans and these dead men all have the same wound as the german soldier from the night before.
as they go thru the woods a few times we need to make an effect that enables men to "SEE SOMETHING at the corner of their eyes.

4.at this point maybe von-stempler will have a "flashback" and this flashback will explain a lot about him and his family.

5.the men setup camp again for a night and once again a man is found dead in the morning.the sentries hear nothing which adds to the mystery.

6.we need a partisan battle today during the march thru the woods.so we make a small battle with deaths on both sides.

7.men bed down for the night and once again a death occurs and we also go to the partisan camp and we see that they are also losing people in an unexplained way.

8.Von-Stempler has a weird Lovecraftian "DREAM".In it he is the high priest or is at a weird ceremony to the Elder Gods and to their doorways being opened and their rising up to take this world over.

9.more running thru the woods and a fight again.i might add that we will need some men to get wounded in these little skirmishes.so some men are being helped by others with their "wounds"

10.little by little the men will be seeing a strange movement that is there and gone quickly.this is the "creature" effect.this creature effect i am thinking of will be easy to do and won't need any elaborate work that would mean money no oneof us has.still a good effect is a good effect and it won't matter if it is not a cool costume, model, or CGI.

One thing you find in a lot of HPL tales is his talk of "other spaces" & dimensions & doorways to other places.SO THAT IS WHAT I WILL DO.....I will make an effect that looks like an "Other Space" and it will sttle right on some one who will then die and be left with strange facial/neck wounds.

11.men setup camp for night and von-stempler will have his final dream scene.in this one he sees his father arguing with a shadowy figure about some "covenant" and his father is saying no to whatever the shadowy being is saying.the shadowy being says a price shall be payed and then it goes black and he wakes up.

12.now they go back thru the woods and even we go to the end and the final "horror"

There are my ideas in a nutshell.This film should have 40 - 70 minutes length in it.When this film is finished I will freely give this away thru my website as well as fully allow filesharing and posting on youtube even.I refuse to make any profit on this film as I am doing this just to do a project.More so I want to show that we do not need Hollywood for filmmaking/distribution.We can make a film,meet like folks on the Internet, and use the net for promotions.I have personally not met any of you nor you me but together just by using a computer it brings folks together to do projects.I hope that this does get made and set onto the Internet.That is it for today

Another Helper for my film

Well I have another helper who can assist me in setting up night filming shots as well as providing a professional steady-cam and some other video gear.My local friend Bill has a bunch of other skills to offer pertaining to filming and technical materials.

I am still working out flashback scens and some other details.Real soon Ihope to give this idea out for folks to assist in the screenplay which I suck at doing.

A bunch of you out there could each write some lines for a specific character and that in itself will help to make this a decent low budget film.You can try to put your self in the head of the soldier and take it from there.

Once I am ready I can write all those who wrote to me as I have all the correspondence saved.I hope to make this an intelligent and for the war stuff good soldierly scenes and dialogue.This film in the end will not be to wild as in crazy ideas.It will be thrilling to watch I hope.

Von Stempler's Doom is probably my film name.

Last night I had a great talk with Chris and we discussed among things the creation of a trailer for this film.So the plans are being set in motion to do this.Columbus day weekend in October I will be taking my camera gear to Massachusetts and meeting up with Chris and the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division to film them in action.I will make up a cool short trailer to use on the blog and elsewhere to help promote the film.

So far we have agreed on my ideas and also on ideas that he has too.
A.) Credit Sequence
B.) Beginning of Film
C.) Chris's idea of both Germans and Partisans being mutilated in the same way and being "hunted"
D.) The whole idea of this film
E.) Being professional in your approach to work
F.) Amount of guys in the group we can probably use
G.) Main characters name
There is more but for now i will sign off.We get along together great and have definate similar interests.
Soon i will have a title of the film.For now we can just call this project
Von Stempler's Doom which is a title I will probably keep.I like it.It is simple and to the point and simple is usually better.

In a couple more weeks I will have to start getting more stuff together.I will finish off my ideas I hope and then it should be close to the time I will start really needing the assistance of others who are from Io9 Group or elsewhere.

I am thinking that I need help in:
1.Script Writing since I suck at Dialogue
2.Art Stuff eventually
3.Special FX stuff eventually
4.Some actors and maybe 1 or 2 girls who can be "partisans".I also have some buddies who are looking forward to playing partisans or russian soldiers.

Great Idea From Chris

Here is Chris's idea that I am going to expand on in the next week.I am thinking of this and of my flashback type scenes.I do like his idea of finding mutilated corpses of partisans and german soldiers who are all mutilated in the same way.
Chris Said,
"One of my ideas to build a supernatural element in the first part of the movie was to have the small group of retreating Germans encounter horribly mutilated bodies of other German soldiers, the Germans might assume these mutilations were done by Red Army soldiers. Later, they come upon some corpses of Soviet soldiers killed and mutilated the same way and now are unsure who is responsible. Perhaps people they assume are partisans are really Cthulhu cultists? Maybe there are both partisans and cultists in the movie."

I still want to talk with Chris about a few things such as:
1.)Giving Military Advice to our scriptwriters when we get to that point
2.)How many guys are in the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division who want to be in the film.
And then I will know how many characters we have as soldiers
3.)Plot and flashback ideas I have to run by him
4.)Since Chris likes old stone structures located in New England I was wondering if he knew about "Dungeon Rock" in the Lynn Woods as I played up threr for years growing up in Lynn.
5.)Need to get Chris's phone number as I lost it.Stupid me.

Back Home Now and done more work getting music together

I have digitized a full Vinyl LP of Nazi music and speeches from Officials during WW2 for music collages.

Oh and I updated this to say I just spent a bunch of time locating a large amount of WW2 German military and political music.I have more of this stuff than i will ever need to use.
And to add on to this music subject I have almost a gig worth of mp3's not counting a real good transfer of a vinyl LP with WW2 stuff.
All the music clips I found are in German and look like they are from all the various branches of the German War Machine.I see that I got 274 different songs/marches and are all at least 192k mp3 in quality.

On Vacation But working

I have been working on the opening credits expanding them and fixing it up.Also I am getting your emails but probably won't respond till I am back home after July 28th.
So here is the opening sequence which should be intelligent and work well.Write down your comments on this section and let me know if this meets all your approvals.

Audio has a few collages I will create using multi-track and by fading/mixing this should be cool.They will be used for audio on the credits.I have a great idea of how to do this cool.I have the gear to make this montage interesting as sounds will be stereo and flow quite nicely.I could find 100's of sounds to use.It might even sound kind of like a changing radio stations does on a old short wave radio.

AUDIO MONTAGE 01 = big guns/sounds of war montage.Lots of gun sounds,soldiers yelling,various machine guns,etc say it is the sounds you hear in battle
AUDIO MONTAGE 02 = the sounds of Nazis like Hitler and other officials speaking
AUDIO MONTAGE 03 = the music of WW2 that is the Nazi songs sang and the military marches/music as well as the popular music soldiers liked.

Now onto the credits themselves....................................................
ONE
Black screen comes up.Using audio montage 02 we start with an indistinct and reverb type voice that will come into clarity with reverb changing to no reverb and sound will get louder on the black screen.the whole thing might last 10-20 seconds tops.
TWO
All of a sudden from nowhere loud explosions and scenes of big guns going off.this might startle the audience and last around 6 - 8 seconds.use only big loud gun sounds
THREE
Now we see some cool German like font come up and say 1939 then Poland and show us some clips of the Polish Campaign
Note that at this point the audio will morph into a cool collage of war sounds utililyzing the 3 montages I will create.
FOUR
Now the action moves too Europe and we see 1940 Europe using the cool fonts. audio uses montages and real footage from the campaign
FIVE
Now show scenes of the Eastern Front with 1941 RUSSIA using real footage from the campaign.
SIX
Now fade down to black and have indistinct type soldiers talking and maybe some Panzer tank or other vehicle sounds but not to loud here.
Write this text or a better text saying this type of stuff:::::
1944 and Germany is losing the war.
Now show clips of German army burning panzers,men retreating,dead soldiers,etc all german stuff showing them losing the war.
"As the German army is smashed on the Eastern Front new army groups are formed from the remnants of once mighty divisions.Somewhere on the Eastern Front one small group is trying desperately to make it safely back to their lines.
Image fades to black at the same time the audio morphs to a WW2 German military march and then it is time to do the cast/opening credits

CAST OPEN CREDITS STUFF
For our cast members I enjoy this type of shot.
Do a quick "action" shot of the actor using a gun,or running, or another type of action.import into edit software as action and after a short time just freeze his clip on screen.with frozen still clip you will put his character name and real name there.this should look decent.Go thru and do all the cast this way except the real minor players.you would probably show each actor like maybe 3 - 5 seconds.
The audio on this can be a simple military drum beat with nothing else, or military march music, or maybe someones original music from this group of volunteers.
some part of me thinks that using only a drum beat for the cast/open credit part might be really cool.What do you think of just the single drum type thing on this part.
After we show the info here it goes to black and then comes up to the main film itself.
THE FILM OPENING SHOT
At the very beginnning I want to take a camera and run thru the wooded area we use so I can use the camera POV to show the running thru woods.For just 10 - 20 seconds I guess you will hear soldiers yelling off camera but see that view from your eyes as you run fast and you would also hear that running soldier's heavy breathing.Some explosion sounds off camera will be good.We will make it obvious someone is running for their live in a battle located in some deep forest.

A few quick last things here................
1.My friend Michele's boyfriend out here in Minnesota is German.He will help me think up a whole slew of fake German names we can use for our German soldier characters.I will write em down on paper for reference.
2.I am slowly brainstorming on a name for the film.Since I believe we can get a decent film doing the following:
A.realistic German soldier action will teach you of "what was it like" to be in an army.The guys I am using on the Internet truly know a lot of soldiering and they will show us how it all worked.some folks might even learn something watching this movie

B.marriage of the HPL !!! we come up with a main character who is from a family who had done dealings with HPL's Elder gods.Our main character is the last descendent of his bloodline.Our main character does not know of the fact he is cursed.thru flashbacks we learn little by little his back story.

C.we try to make this film with intelligence not dumbness !!! let us try to keep this film as realistic as we can so it looks and feels real and the plot/dialogue is thought out and done cool.

D.we don't have to go all out on the HPL stuff.By doing so it will only make HPL fans interested in this and not a larger audience.Maybe this film will be like 2/3rds war and 1/3rd HPL....does that make sense and what do you think ?

E.Once I have my main character's name (which I am brainstorming on) then I will have my film title.I will do that this week I hope.I do have some names in my head.I do have film names too in my head.What I will do is throw out a few at the group and see what you all will think.

I leave for 2 weeks off on Monday.I got a bunch of WW@ books to read.Mostly
Stalingrad non-fiction stuff but wil definately put me in the mood for writing out a more expanded outline.

I did give a thought to actually translating an english script to german & russian but we will stick toour native USA because in order for a foreign language to work out you would all have to have the right accent or it will sound stupid, unintelligent, and fake.

Synopsis and Outline of WW2/Cthulu film begins

The quick synopsis of my film:
It is the end of WW2 on the Eastern Front.The remnants of the once mighty German Military
are desperately trying to reach safe lines.They are attacked and harried by partisans in the deep forests but
soon it becomes apparent that they are hunted by something else.............

First off this film will be an intelligent work of art not a dumb stereotypical monster flick.Most of my film will portray accuratly the life of a
soldier in WW2.There will be no modern gear and all the characters will be using the same type of things they would of used back in the
1940's.At least half this film will be a serious type war flick and then the horror element will enter.Be prepared for psychological type
terror that will grow and grow until the ultimate horror is revealed in the end.

The opening credits of film will have a layered audio montage full of WW2 sound bites and 1940's period music German soldiers
would of listened to.The video on credits will be all close-up shots of the 3rd Panzergernadier Division Re-Enacters who will be
filmed with either a video cam or a still cam in "action" shots.For instance the cam could focus on one soldier as he gets ready
to throw a grenade,another soldier who is lying down to fire a gun,another soldier is running,a few soldiers could be behind one of the
PAK Cannons, etc. And while I show the quick action clips the cast names,director,other credits are show here in this area.
Then the screen fades to black and we see some text come up...........(i dont have all that yet) but anyways this text is quick and
simple.I just need to think that one up.

Now the movie starts and you are swept right into a thrilling battle scene.The film will now follow these German soldiers escaping thru
the deep wilderness being harried and chased by a large band of partisans.Over the next days they fight for their lives and also get
less and less sleep as well as worry about their precarious position in these woods.

Soon we also get swept into the mounting terror as we see "objects" move quickly and move out of vision like seeing a "blur" at the
corner of your eyes.And then the German soldiers here strange sounds and soon a weird chanting ( the weird lovecraft cthulu chants).
Not all the soldiers here this stuff and you start to wonder if the soldiers are hearing things or imagining things.

Eventually we learn that there really is a horror out in the woods and when that becomes apparent we eventually learn the reason why,
And around this point in the film men will be dying by weird and mysterious means.

It is now that we learn thru flashbacks that it is one of the men who is the last of his line and his line had made a pact with a Cthulu
deity many years in the past..This man's family had a curse on it and all the men from that family all died in a mysterious way.Now
he will die along with the group of soldiers.

That is my brief outline which I will be fleshing out more.then I will need to start getting together with others who want to see this film
happen.

I just got off the phone with Chris from the Historical Re-Enactor Group called,
3RD PANZER GRENADIER DIVISION which was a real division back in world War 2.These guys are cool guys who live around Massachusetts like to play at war and love horror/science fiction.Chris also was impressed with my punk rock history which was cool.The internet can be a small place when you meet folks who like the same stuff you like.Chris is really happy to work on this project.He loves H.P.Lovecraft and is very excited to do what he told me he has dreamt of doing and that is to do a WW2/Cthulu film.

Now that I have a cast of German soldiers I need to move on a story to give out to others here who have said they want to help with the writing.

I had to add that bottom image of a few of the division and one of their authentic PAK Cannons.
These PAK guns were used throughout WW2 by the German Armies.

I am busy trying to find a place where I can get a round 6 -8 WW2 German Soldier outfits.So far nothing yet here in Maine to report but I am trying to find it in this state first.

Looks like their are other WW2/Horror fans out there.I just contacted a professional WW2 German Soldier re-enactment group and got a reply.He seems interested in the film..wants some details..and also is a horrror buff.Could it be that I will actuall get a group of guys with full uniforms/weapons !!!!

My Idea For A Original WW2/HPL Thriller Short

Hello All:
I am slowly coming round to fleshing out a short-type film that might end up being a cross between a Twilight Zone Episode and a HPL Horror Thriller.
When it comes to reading I guess my favorite forms of literature have been WW2 books and science fiction.H.P.Lovecraft and LOTR are right up there as favorites as well.Now for years I have wanted to see some serious type Lovecraft full feature or short feature films come out that are not dumbed down as "campy" stuff.Here is an idea that may work out with a little work and effort.

Basically this film will start out with a small but active battle somewhere deep in a forest sitting supposedly on the Eastern Front.The action is hot the germans are doing a fighting retreat and they end up spotting a cave.The germans run into the cave trying to hold off a greater number of russians.they are forced deeper into the cave which is a dead-end and then the russians throw grenades which cause a cave in.
The cave in forces a new hole in the floor of the cave which reveals a passageway.......... Who built this passageway and why ?
"A Place is discovered which had better been left alone"

NOTE: I am not intending to just make some kind of dumb creature movie.This is how the scene could be setup to discover an object right out of a Lovecraft Nightmare !!!I will be back with more to add onto.

I made this a spot where each can write down his or her favorite story of H.P.Lovecraft that you always wanted to see someone do a really cool version of.I will check back and see what all of your Lovecraft ideas would be.

And for those fans of Clark Ashton Smith I would go sdo far as to say I have always been interested in seeing a decent version film of a CA Smith story.I have read him since I was a child at the same time my Lovecraft started.

To my knowledge no one has ever done a film version of one of his weird tales !!!! And that would be a cool and original thing to do.He did make great contributions to the scifi/horror/fantasy genre but unfortunately he is not as well known as HPL opr RE Howard.

Sick of Hollywood Remakes

I am thinking that rather than just moan about Hollywood trashing my favorite older scifi films I want to do something about it.
Since the 1970's I have been involved in recording audio and playing in my own small Punk rock Bands.I have also worked on cutting film, cutting, and splicing old reel to reel audio as well.I am self taught but I do know a lot about shooting and editing video.I started doing that with an old 3/4" tethered video deck/camera............Nowadays I design my own workstations and own some cool stuff as well as have access to a bunch of gear for free.Cirrently my home studio/play around is :

That is pretty much my workstation for editing films and I got over a terabyte of external drives for backup of film data.

WHY I MENTIONED THIS

Now I told all of you that I do have some nice gear and guess what.It will all be free and it will be my donation of use if a bunch of us can come together on a solid film idea.I am looking for others out there who are sick of remakes and want to get together and do a net collaboration on a film.It could be a difficult task to perform but I do have optimism that it could happen.We can all leave comments and ideas on this page.I want to open this up to my fellow members of IO9 and hey others too if you know any.
Eventually of course if we work it all out on the NET we will agree on a place to film and all involved will meet up for the video shoot.

1. My main interest and primary goal is to make an original science fiction and/or science fiction horror film.Something that has never been made before so no remake/reboot ideas in any format allowed.

One thing I have only got to see once in my life is to see a worthy and true adaptation of a H.P.Lovecraft story set right in the time he is writing from.CHECK OUT: Call of Cthulu movie for a group that has done the best ever coolest Lovecraft film to date.And it did not ever come from Hollywood.
B.) My other interest is of course Science Fiction.I own around 200 vintage Pulps full of cool & weird super science ideas.Then I own around 600 or so vintage science fiction paperbacks.I love all kinds of scifi w/ robots,space battles,drama in space,empires like the Dune series.I like a ton of different types of good scifi.

I am new to doing a blog but I am interested in putting up a blog and maybe putting up some free old 1970's- early 80's punk rock music.There are a ton of these mp3 blogs on the Internet all sharing old OOP Music.In my case I would share legal music that I personally recorded both studio and live stuff from the area.

I have currently been waiting to receive a whole slew of reel to reel 7" tapes for me to work on and digitize.They are of the early Boston Punk rock Scene and are of historical use to some out there.Eventually I will get my hands on my dead friend, Dave "Hardcore" Koehler.When I get those tapes they will have a home here for you to download and listen to the vintage Boston, Massachusetts Punk Rock Scene.
